Auto Brands at CES: Why the Motor Show Is No Longer Enough
7/1/2026

As automakers have sought to appear more like tech companies and integrate more software-based features into their vehicles, CES has rivalled auto shows as a venue for big announcements
CES 2026 featured BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Sony Honda Mobility, Waymo, Geely, and Caterpillar — and the automotive hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center drew some of the show's most significant press coverage.
The Audience Has Changed
Traditional motor shows were built around consumers and automotive press. CES puts auto brands in front of a fundamentally different room: technology investors, software developers, enterprise buyers, and the global media that covers AI and mobility as converging categories. For brands repositioning around software-defined vehicles, autonomous systems, and in-car AI, that audience is more commercially relevant than the one walking the Geneva or Frankfurt floor.
CES 2026 highlighted a shift in automotive strategy: cars are increasingly positioned as intelligent, upgradable platforms within broader digital and data ecosystems. That framing lands differently at a technology show than at a motor show, and brands know it.
What Automotive Brands Are Actually Doing at CES
Sony Honda Mobility used CES 2026 to hold its first-ever independent press conference, unveiling the AFEELA 1 pre-production model and a new prototype concept. The brand positioned its vehicles explicitly as "experience spaces on wheels" — AI-enabled digital platforms built around Sony's entertainment ecosystem. That narrative requires a technology audience to land.
Caterpillar took a 360-degree theater welcome moment approach, backing a keynote address on industrial AI and autonomy with a live Cat 306 mini excavator demonstration on the show floor. The collaboration announcement with NVIDIA's robotics and edge AI division was made at CES, not at a construction industry event, because the partner and the press it needed were in Las Vegas, not anywhere else.
BMW used its CES 2026 presence to showcase the Neue Klasse EV platform and the iX3, embedding its AI-powered personal assistant into a personalized video experience that generated organic social content throughout the show. Mercedes-Benz brought the American debut of the new GLC-Class electric SUV.

The Exhibit Implications
A car at a motor show is expected. A car at CES is a statement. The brands that perform best in Las Vegas understand that the exhibit environment at CES demands a different frame: the vehicle is not the product on display, the technology platform is. Waymo's booth built its entire experience around letting visitors perceive the world through the Waymo driver's sensors. Sony Honda Mobility's booth architecture expressed its three brand values physically. Neither treated the car as the center of attention.
